Trump Says U.S.-Iran Talks Are Underway... Iran Says It Has No Such Plans

On the 3rd local time, President Trump said on Truth Social that "peace talks are underway, whether Iran admits it or not." He also called Iran's leadership "unbelievably duplicitous" and accused it of "lying about the ongoing negotiations."
He also claimed that the United States has complete control over the Strait of Hormuz, saying that "nothing can go into Iran if we don't want it to, and nothing will get through until a deal is reached or there is total surrender."
Iran immediately denied the claim.
At a press briefing that day, Esmail Baghaei Hamaneh, spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, said, "There are no current plans to resume direct talks with the United States." His remarks directly contradicted Trump's statement just hours after he said negotiations would resume later in the afternoon.
Baghaei explained that the only talks now under way are consultations with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
The day before, President Trump had also said he would cancel a large-scale airstrike on Iran if "a quick deal is possible," claiming that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries had asked him to hold off on the attack because a broad framework for an agreement had been drawn up.
However, since this war began, President Trump has said several times that a deal was imminent, but no permanent agreement has been signed. The temporary ceasefire reached in June has already collapsed.
