[Financial News] Hyundai Motor Company and Kia set new all-time July sales records in the U.S. market last month. While demand for electric vehicles weakened after tax credit reductions, hybrid vehicles helped support overall sales growth.
According to the industry on the 3rd, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia sold a combined 165,284 vehicles in the United States in July, up 5.0% from a year earlier. Hyundai Motor Company, including Genesis, sold 89,427 units, up 3.7%, while Kia sold 75,857 units, up 6.7%. Genesis alone sold 6,947 vehicles, up 3.9%.
Both companies broke their own July sales records since entering the U.S. market. For Hyundai Motor Company, the Elantra sold 17,115 units, jumping 38.5%, while the Tucson rose 20.2% to 19,714 units, leading performance across the SUV lineup. Santa Fe sales came to 13,373 units.
Kia also continued to see strong results from the Sportage, Telluride, and Carnival, which sold 16,083, 11,816, and 7,279 units, respectively. The K4 also contributed with 12,094 units sold. For Genesis, the GV70 sold 2,985 units and the GV80 sold 2,372 units, supporting brand growth.
The eco-friendly vehicle segment showed mixed results. Eco-friendly vehicle sales in July totaled 50,937 units, up 24.7% from a year earlier and accounting for 30.8% of total sales. Among them, hybrid sales surged 52.2% to 43,727 units, with Hyundai Motor Company selling 22,733 units, up 35%, and Kia selling 20,994 units, up 76.6%, both posting double-digit growth.
By contrast, electric vehicle sales came to just 7,210 units, down 40.5%. The end of tax credits was cited as the main reason. Hyundai Motor Company's electric vehicle sales fell 46.1% to 4,545 units, while Kia's electric vehicle sales dropped 27.7% to 2,665 units.
