Yangsan hits 41.6 C, the highest ever recorded in South Korea... Gimhae, Changwon and Busan also topped 40 C [Nationwide heat wave]

[Financial News] On the 1st, the temperature in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, surged to 41.6 C, breaking South Korea's all-time high for modern weather observations in just one day. The reading was 0.2 C higher than the 41.4 C set in the same area the previous day. Extreme heat above 40 C was also recorded in parts of Busan, Changwon and Gimhae in the South Gyeongsang region.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Yangsan's temperature reached 41.6 C at 2:08 p.m. that day. The city first hit 40 C at 12:14 p.m. and continued to warm afterward.
Based on the KMA's 97 climate statistics observation sites used to rank temperatures nationwide, this was the highest temperature recorded in South Korea since modern meteorological observations began in 1904. As of 3 p.m., severe heat wave alerts were in effect in parts of South Jeolla and North Gyeongsang provinces, while heat wave warnings covered most other regions across the country.
In South Gyeongsang Province, where severe heat wave alerts were issued, Gimhae recorded 40.6 C, Busan's Geumjeong District 40.5 C, and Changwon 40.4 C, following Yangsan. Ulsan's Onsan reached 39.8 C, and Docheon in Changnyeong rose to 39.3 C.
In North Gyeongsang Province, Guryongpo, Pohang, posted the highest temperature at 39.2 C, followed by 38.3 C in Guryongpo, Pohang, and 37.9 C in Yeongdeok. In South Jeolla Province, Gwangyang-eup climbed to 38.7 C, while Beolgyo in Boseong and Yeosu Airport each reached 38.5 C.
With humidity added in, the perceived heat spread nationwide. As of 3 p.m., Yangsan had the highest daily apparent temperature at 39.3 C. It was followed by 38.5 C in Bukbusan, 38.4 C in Gimhae, and 38.3 C in Bukchangwon. Beolgyo in Boseong recorded 37.9 C, Gwangyang-eup 37.7 C, and Suncheon 37.3 C.
In the Seoul metropolitan area, the maximum apparent temperature in Namchon, Osan, Gyeonggi Province, rose to 37.0 C. Deokpung in Hanam reached 36.9 C, and Nowon in Seoul recorded 36.7 C. In Gangwon Province, Samcheok climbed to 37.3 C, Joryang in Sokcho to 37.2 C, and Gyeongpo in Gangneung to 37.0 C.
In the Chungcheong region, the highest apparent temperature was 36.6 C in Gowun-dong, Sejong, Gadeok in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, and Jeongsan in Cheongyang, South Chungcheong Province. In Jeju, Jase-ri in Seogwipo and Jeju recorded 35.5 C and 35.2 C, respectively, underscoring the life-threatening heat that continued across most of the country.
