[Financial News] CBS reported on the 31st local time that the United States and Israel are planning what could be the most intense bombing campaign in history against Iran's energy facilities this weekend, on the 1st and 2nd.
CBS, citing multiple sources, reported that the United States and Israel are discussing strikes on energy infrastructure such as power plants and refineries. According to CBS, Israel has already been informed of the plan, but President Donald Trump has not yet given final approval. Some White House aides are said to have strongly opposed it.
Because the impact on the global economy would be significant, there were also discussions about completing the operation before financial markets open on the 3rd. However, the end point has not been confirmed. CBS also said senior U.S. officials considered cutting power across Tehran, but no decision was made.
If Israel joins the strike, it would mean reentering the war. Israel had joined the U.S. in striking Iran at the start of the conflict in late February, but it has not been heavily involved in the fighting since the U.S.-Iran MOU was signed.
Earlier in the day, President Trump also signaled a large-scale strike on Iran during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David in Maryland. "We are going to hit them very hard," Trump said. "At some point, they will say, 'We can't take it anymore.'"
Meanwhile, Sean Parnell, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Defense, said the department would not comment on targets before the president makes a final decision. "The Department of Defense is fully prepared and ready to carry out the president's orders immediately," he emphasized.
If a strike on Iran's energy facilities becomes reality, it could further escalate the war. Iran's economy depends heavily on exports of energy resources such as oil and gas, which are also vital to the country's operations and daily life.
