Han Dong-hoon on repeal of supplementary investigation powers: "Jung Sung-ho should stake his job and demand a veto"

[Financial News] Han Dong-hoon, an independent lawmaker, said on the 31st that once the filibuster aimed at blocking the passage of a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act of the Republic of Korea, which would abolish prosecutors' supplementary investigation powers and expand the grounds for courts to dismiss indictments, came to an end, "The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) will collapse starting today," and urged, "Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho should stake his job and tell President Lee Jae-myung to exercise a veto."
At the National Assembly Rotunda Hall that day, Han told reporters, "A government that pushes ahead with policies that unfairly harm and hurt the majority of the public without any rational basis will not be able to survive," and made the remarks above.
On the move to expand the grounds for dismissing indictments through the revision bill, Han said, "They say it is based on precedent, but they replied that it could also apply to President Lee Jae-myung's case." He added, "If a real estate broker seized power and then made a law exempting brokers from taxes, how would the public see that? Wouldn't that be shameless conflict of interest?"
He continued, "This Criminal Procedure Act revision bill is a law meant to support President Lee Jae-myung's withdrawal of indictments." He added, "There has never been such a retreat in the judiciary in history. It is a humiliating day, and people will come to think that there can be no further retreat from here." The revision bill was amended during review to allow courts to dismiss indictments when a case was filed "through serious illegal investigation" or when it was filed "by significantly deviating from prosecutorial discretion."
Han had applied to lead a filibuster to block the revision of the Criminal Procedure Act, but the plan fell through after he was assigned a later speaking slot. He said, "It is disappointing, but I think I have already spoken enough through various means about the problems with abolishing supplementary investigations, which are the people's right, as well as the Democratic Party's wickedness and incompetence."
