[Financial News] A customer’s story is drawing attention online after she said she was publicly scolded by a restaurant owner for taking food several times at a Korean buffet and ended up paying for two meals. Netizens criticized the owner’s response, saying the buffet operator had made the customer feel unwelcome.
On the 1st, News 1 reported on a woman’s account shared on social network service (SNS) platforms and online communities, saying she had been publicly criticized by the owner after visiting a Korean buffet on the 30th.
The woman, identified as A, said she had recently been visiting various Korean buffets to enjoy different menu items. At the restaurant she visited that day, she claimed the owner criticized her for going back for food several times.
She said the owner shouted at her in front of other customers, asking, "Are you eating too much?"
A explained that she had not taken large portions at once, but had simply served herself small amounts of different dishes to try them. She said she first took several side dishes, then bibimbap, and later pumpkin porridge, seaweed soup, and dongchimi broth.
The owner, however, reportedly looked at A and asked, "How many people ate all this?" Even after A said she was eating alone, the owner continued to show displeasure.
A said, "The owner embarrassed me in front of everyone, then loudly told the kitchen staff, 'Is this really okay?' The kitchen staff also scolded me, saying, 'You can't do this when you're paying 8,000 won.'"
Unable to continue the argument in public, A said she offered to pay extra, and the owner ultimately charged her for two meals.
A said, "Even while I was paying, I kept hearing that I had eaten too much. I wondered if I had really done something wrong, but I felt terrible."
Once the story spread, online reactions quickly turned critical of the owner’s behavior.
Netizens left comments such as, "If you think that way, you shouldn't run a buffet," "It's hard to understand opening an all-you-can-eat place and then making customers feel uncomfortable," "She didn't even seem to eat that much, so publicly humiliating her was excessive," and "If you're going to treat customers like that, you should change your business."
