Trump Says Hamas Has Agreed to Full Disarmament, Hailing Progress Toward Peace in Gaza

[Financial News] Hamas, the armed group that has ruled the Gaza Strip with an iron fist since 2007 and sparked the Gaza War in 2023, is reported to have agreed to complete disarmament.
U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on the 30th (local time), "Today, the Board of Peace reached a historic agreement for the full disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza. This is a monumental step toward lasting peace and security in Gaza."
The Gaza Strip is a narrow, elongated area along the Mediterranean coast just north of Egypt's border. Its area is about 365 square kilometers, roughly comparable to Sejong City in South Korea. Israel occupied the territory from the 1967 Third Middle East War until 2005, after which it came under the control of the Palestinian Authority (PA).
After winning the 2006 Palestinian legislative election, Hamas formed a unity government with Fatah, the faction that led the PA, but the two sides continued to clash over the election results. In mid-June 2007, Hamas staged a coup in Gaza and drove out Fatah and PA forces. Hamas launched the Gaza War by attacking Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and agreed to a ceasefire with Israel last year. Trump created a new international body, the Board of Peace, last October, saying it would mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
On the 30th, Trump wrote, "This agreement is a decisive step toward Gaza finally coming under the rule of a new Palestinian government, which will work closely with the Board of Peace to help the Palestinian people." He added, "At the same time, Israel will secure the safety it deserves, as Gaza will no longer be used as a base for terrorist attacks."
Trump also said, "Once disarmament is complete, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to ensure Gaza's security for the people of Gaza and neighboring countries."
Earlier, Hamas announced on the 6th that it had formally dissolved its governing body in Gaza and would transfer all administrative authority to the Gaza National Administrative Committee (NCAG), the Gaza administration under the Board of Peace. Hamas has not yet issued an official response to Trump's announcement on the 30th.
