Foreign investors net sold 49.3 trillion won in domestic stocks in June, extending selling streak to six months

[Financial News] Foreign investors net sold more than 49 trillion won worth of listed domestic stocks last month, extending their net selling streak to six straight months. In contrast, they made net investments of 447.8 billion won in listed bonds, keeping a net inflow trend for the third consecutive month. According to the Financial Supervisory Service's June foreign securities investment trends released on the 31st, foreigners net sold 49.336 trillion won in listed stocks and net invested 447.8 billion won in listed bonds last month.
Foreign securities investment funds, including stocks and bonds, recorded a net outflow of 44.858 trillion won. The Financial Supervisory Service statistics are compiled on a settlement basis.
Stock selling was concentrated in the Korea Exchange Main Board. Foreign investors net sold 50.979 trillion won on the main board, while they net bought 1.643 trillion won in the KOSDAQ market.
By region, net sales totaled 30.758 trillion won from Europe and 26.961 trillion won from the Americas. By country, the United Kingdom posted the largest net sales at 32.2 trillion won, followed by the United States with 23.182 trillion won and Luxembourg with 4.269 trillion won. The Cayman Islands, France and Hong Kong recorded net purchases of 7.269 trillion won, 6.113 trillion won and 5.272 trillion won, respectively.
As of the end of June, foreign holdings of listed stocks stood at 2,908.639 trillion won, up 56.33 trillion won from the previous month. Their share of total market capitalization also rose by 1.1 percentage points, from 35.3% to 36.4%. However, the total market capitalization of listed stocks in June fell to 7,982.827 trillion won from May.
By country, U.S. holdings amounted to 1,222.34 trillion won, accounting for 42.0% of total foreign holdings. Europe held 899 trillion won, or 30.9%, Asia 411.2 trillion won, or 14.1%, and the Middle East 60.6 trillion won, or 2.1%.
In the bond market, foreigners net bought 13.9 trillion won and received 9.423 trillion won in principal repayments, resulting in a net investment of 4.478 trillion won. As of the end of June, foreign holdings of listed bonds stood at 334.794 trillion won, up 1.208 trillion won from the previous month. That accounted for 11.8% of the total listed bond balance.
By bond type, 4.727 trillion won was net invested in government bonds, while special bonds saw a net outflow of 250 billion won and monetary stabilization bonds a net outflow of 40 billion won. Among bonds held by foreigners, government bonds accounted for 317.727 trillion won, or 94.9% of the total.
By remaining maturity, 7.858 trillion won was net invested in bonds with maturities of one year or more but less than five years, and 6.515 trillion won in bonds with maturities of five years or more. Bonds with maturities of less than one year saw a net outflow of 9.896 trillion won, mainly due to principal repayments at maturity.
