Although the Federal Reserve decided to keep its benchmark rate unchanged after the FOMC on the 29th local time, investor sentiment weakened somewhat as Kevin Warsh continued to strike a hawkish tone. In a press conference immediately after the meeting, Warsh said, "If inflation remains elevated throughout the forecast period, rates could still be part of the solution."
Wall Street also fell across the board. On the 29th local time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) plunged 1,152.82 points, or 2.19%, from the previous session to close at 51,594.50. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (S&P 500) fell 112.56 points, or 1.52%, to 7,316.15. Nasdaq ended the session down 433.97 points, or 1.74%, at 24,442.94.
