According to Yuhan Corporation on the 30th, Mexico is expected to offer strong growth potential in the related health functional food market, as interest in blood sugar management is high. The country is one of the largest health functional food markets in Latin America and also has a high diabetes prevalence. Data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2024 showed that the diabetes prevalence among Mexican adults aged 20 to 79 was about 16.4%.
Yuhan Corporation previously signed a five-year supply contract worth about 13 billion won with a local partner in Mexico in 2024. It then completed the product registration process in 2025, laying the groundwork for local sales. The two companies plan to develop a marketing strategy that includes local clinical trials and expand consumer touchpoints through a range of distribution channels, both online and offline.
DangQLac is a health functional food individually approved for its main ingredient, the Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HAC01 strain, which was developed through about 10 years of research. The HAC01 strain has been recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for its blood sugar-lowering function after meals. In human clinical trials, eight weeks of intake led to statistically significant reductions in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and two-hour postprandial blood glucose levels.
Its performance in the domestic market also became a foundation for overseas expansion. Since its launch in South Korea in April 2023, DangQLac has recorded cumulative sales of 60 billion won over three years. It has also been recognized for its technology and product competitiveness, winning the Patent Technology Award in 2023, the NutraIngredients Asia Ingredient Award in 2024, and the IR52 Jang Young-sil Award in 2025.
Yuhan Corporation plans to expand its Latin American business, starting with the Mexican market. The company aims to raise awareness of DangQLac's blood sugar management benefits among local consumers, broaden its distribution network, secure a foothold in the market, and then expand into neighboring countries.
A Yuhan Corporation official said, "Mexico is one of the Latin American countries with a high diabetes prevalence and a particularly strong growth trend in the health functional food market. Based on DangQLac's differentiated blood sugar management benefits, we plan to expand contact with local consumers and use that as a springboard to grow our business across the broader Latin American market."
