[Financial News, New York = Reporter Lee Byung-chul] Kevin Warsh, chairman of the Federal Reserve System, held a press conference after the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on the 29th and reiterated the Federal Reserve's 2% inflation target.
Warsh said, "The FOMC is firmly committed to achieving price stability," and added, "The Federal Reserve's only goal is 2% inflation. There is no loose inflation target or any other implicit objective."
Asked about not giving advance guidance on the future direction of monetary policy, he explained, "In a highly uncertain environment like the current one, it is prudent not to provide forward guidance."
As Warsh repeatedly emphasized the 2% inflation target without offering specific signals on the future path of interest rates, markets are interpreting that the Federal Reserve's policy direction will be determined by upcoming inflation and employment data.
He also offered a positive assessment of the U.S. economy. Warsh said, "The U.S. economy is showing impressive resilience," and added, "Despite several recent shocks, the overall economic trend remains positive."
