[Financial News] Jung Chung-rae, a candidate for leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), said on the 29th that Jung Sung-sik, the Speaker of the National Assembly, should apologize for remarks suggesting that a sitting president could also be included as a candidate for reelection in the event of a constitutional amendment.
That day, Jung posted on social media an article quoting Hong Ik-pyo, the Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs at Cheong Wa Dae, who dismissed the idea of a constitutional amendment allowing a sitting president to seek reelection by saying it was "impossible." Jung said, "I fully agree." He added, "Wouldn't it be a good idea for the Speaker to explain again, and if necessary, consider apologizing?" and said, "Better safe than sorry."
Earlier, during a press briefing at the National Assembly the previous day, the Speaker had said, "The issue of a sitting president in a constitutional amendment is ultimately a matter of the people's choice." As the remarks were interpreted as leaving open the possibility of Lee Jae Myung seeking reelection through a constitutional amendment, the DPK moved quickly to contain the fallout. Another party leadership contender, Song Young-gil, also criticized the remarks on radio that day, calling them "inappropriate."
