Three earthquakes struck in succession after a powerful magnitude 7.1 quake hit Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. As tremors from the first quake reached many parts of South Korea, including Busan and Gyeongnam, the National Fire Agency received 789 reports from people who felt the shaking. No damage has been confirmed so far.
According to the National Fire Agency, 789 earthquake-related reports had been tallied by 5:30 p.m. These reports indicated that people felt shaking, rather than actual earthquake damage.
By region, Busan had the most reports at 291. It was followed by Ulsan with 125, Gyeongnam with 120, Changwon with 95, North Gyeongsang Province with 69, Jeollanam-do with 46, Incheon with 17, Gwangju with 9, North Jeolla Province with 5, Gyeonggi Province with 4, Daejeon with 3, North Chungcheong Province with 2, and one each in Seoul, Daegu and Jeju.
In Busan, Gyeongnam, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do and Jeju Island, maximum instrumental intensity 3 (III) shaking was expected. Intensity 3 means people indoors can clearly feel the shaking, and parked vehicles may sway slightly.
In Gangwon Province, Gyeonggi Province, North Gyeongsang Province, Daegu, Ulsan, North Jeolla Province, South Chungcheong Province and North Chungcheong Province, maximum instrumental intensity 2 (II) was expected. At that level, some people in quiet indoor spaces or on upper floors of buildings may feel the tremor.
Meanwhile, the Korea Meteorological Administration said a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Uki in Kumamoto Prefecture at around 4:27 p.m. that day.
Forty-one minutes after the first quake, at 5:08 p.m., a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred offshore, 49 km south-southwest of Kumamoto City.
