Police Reapply for Arrest Warrant for Former Detective Chief in the Jang Yoon-gi Case

[Financial News] Police investigating allegations of a botched probe into the Jang Yoon-gi case have reapplied for an arrest warrant for the former detective chief who handled the case at the time.
The Special Investigation Team for Fact-Finding in the Jang Yoon-gi Case at the National Police Agency said on the 28th that it had reapplied for an arrest warrant for former Gwangsan Police Station detective chief A, who is suspected of abuse of authority, obstruction of the exercise of rights, and dereliction of duty.
A is accused of exerting undue influence during the investigation into the Jang Yoon-gi case so that the charge would be changed from murder for the purpose of rape to simple murder.
The special team had requested an arrest warrant on the 16th, saying detention was necessary, but the court rejected it. At the time, the court reportedly found it difficult to recognize sufficient grounds or justification for detention, considering the degree to which the alleged crimes were substantiated by the evidence collected, the room for dispute, and the progress of the investigation.
After summoning A for questioning as a suspect the previous day, the special team again concluded that detention was necessary and filed for the warrant.
The team also plans to question B, a police officer on the investigation team at the time, as a suspect on charges of leaking official secrets.
B is accused of repeatedly speaking with Jang Yoon-gi's father, who is also a police officer, and sharing details related to the investigation.
