[Financial News] Soonchunhyang University (SCH) was found to have admitted 11 more medical school freshmen this year than its enrollment quota. As a result, the university will have to reduce its medical school intake by 11 students in 2028, two years from now.
According to the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea on the 27th, SCH admitted 113 students in February through its additional recruitment process for the 2026 regular and early admissions cycle, 11 more than its quota of 102. The university said that while staff were calling 11 students on the waiting list to ask whether they intended to enroll, they had already filled the additional admission slots, but due to an error by the staff in charge, 11 more students were registered.
SCH reportedly learned of the mistake only after notifying the successful applicants and then voluntarily reported it to the ministry.
The ministry will conduct a full inspection in March to determine whether each university admitted freshmen in line with its enrollment quota. SCH informed the ministry before that inspection began.
Under relevant regulations, the ministry ordered SCH to cut its medical school admission quota by 11 students for the 2028 academic year. The 2027 admission plan, set for next year, has already been finalized and announced. The ministry also issued a warning to the staff member involved.
A ministry official said, "The university shared the matter after the additional admissions had already been completed, so the situation was already finalized." The official added, "We instructed the university to reduce the 2028 admission quota and issue a warning to the staff member responsible."
