Trump Says He Is in Last-Minute Talks With Iran, Warns of Another Attack if They Fail

According to Axios on the 27th local time, President Trump said in an interview, "We are in very deep negotiations with Iran," and added, "If the talks do not produce results, we will go back to very strong military action."
The key issue in the talks is to reach a new agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart broader nuclear negotiations. Iran and Oman are leading the discussions, while Qatar, Pakistan, and Egypt are also taking part in mediation. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, both envoys for President Trump, are also said to be involved.
When asked how much more time he would give diplomacy, President Trump replied, "There is not much time. The talks will either move quickly or not happen at all." His remarks suggested that he could again turn to military pressure if the negotiations drag on.
He also explained why he halted the strikes last Friday. President Trump said, "All the mediators dealing with Iran asked me not to attack," and added, "I think Iran also wants a deal."
He then explained why he accepted the mediators' request, saying, "Nothing gained, nothing lost," and added that he thought it would not hurt to give the talks one more chance.
President Trump also noted that global oil prices fell and U.S. stocks rose after the strikes were halted, stressing that markets were responding positively to the possibility of a diplomatic solution.
Attention is also turning to the next round of talks. President Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on the 29th.
He said, "I will tell Bibi that if I had not been president, Iran would already have nuclear weapons and Israel would have been destroyed," signaling that he would reaffirm coordination on Iran policy.
