Extreme Heat Near 39 Degrees in the South... Showers and Tropical Nights at Night

[Financial News] In Jeollanam-do and some parts of Daegu, North Gyeongsang Province, and South Gyeongsang Province, an extreme heat emergency warning remains in effect. On the 27th, the apparent temperature is expected to rise to 38 degrees Celsius, with the daytime high reaching 39 degrees or more. Tropical nights, when the overnight low stays above 25 degrees, were also recorded in many areas nationwide, including Seoul, Cheongju, Busan, and Jeju.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), from 6 p.m. on the 26th to 6 a.m. on the 27th, Cheongju recorded the highest overnight low at 27.5 degrees Celsius. It was followed by Seoul at 27.3 degrees, Busan and Seogwipo at 27.1 degrees, Jeju at 27.0 degrees, Incheon and Yeosu at 26.7 degrees, Mokpo at 26.6 degrees, Gwangju at 26.5 degrees, Suwon at 26.4 degrees, and Jeonju at 26.3 degrees.
In the Chungcheong region, Boryeong and Seosan recorded 26.2 degrees Celsius, Hongseong County 26.0 degrees, Daejeon 25.7 degrees, and Cheonan 25.0 degrees. In the Gyeongsang region, Yangsan recorded 26.7 degrees, Gumi and Changwon 26.2 degrees, Gimhae 26.0 degrees, Sangju 25.7 degrees, Pohang 25.3 degrees, and Tongyeong 25.2 degrees.
A tropical night is defined as a phenomenon in which the temperature does not fall below 25 degrees Celsius from 6:01 p.m. the previous day to 9 a.m. the next day. This tally is based on 6 a.m. readings, so if the temperature drops below 25 degrees before 9 a.m., it may not be counted as a tropical night.
During the day, life-threatening heat is expected to continue, especially in the southern regions. Areas currently under an extreme heat emergency warning include Gwangyang in Jeollanam-do; areas of Daegu excluding Gunwi County; Gyeongsan, Cheongdo County, Goryeong County, Pohang, the northern and southern parts of Gyeongju, and the central and southern parts of North Gyeongsang Province; and Yangsan, Gimhae, Miryang, Uiryeong County, Haman County, Changnyeong County, and the central part of Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province. In these areas, the maximum apparent temperature is expected to exceed 38 degrees Celsius, or the daytime high is expected to rise above 39 degrees.
The KMA urged people to suspend or postpone outdoor activities and outdoor work as much as possible, except for essential duties, and to move to shaded areas or cooling shelters and rest there.
Heat advisories are also in effect across most of the country. For the time being, the maximum apparent temperature will remain above 33 degrees Celsius in most areas and above 35 degrees in the southern regions.
Strong showers are also expected, mainly in the central region. Showers are forecast in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, and Gangwon State through the night of the 27th, while some areas in northern South Chungcheong Province, central and northern North Chungcheong Province, and northern North Gyeongsang Province may also see showers from morning through night. Expected rainfall is 5 to 60 millimeters in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, and the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon State, and 5 to 30 millimeters along the east coast of Gangwon State. Northern South Chungcheong Province, central and northern North Chungcheong Province, and northern North Gyeongsang Province are expected to receive 5 to 40 millimeters, while the Five West Sea Islands are expected to get 5 to 20 millimeters.
In particular, from daytime to evening, parts of the capital region and Gangwon State may see strong showers of 20 to 30 millimeters per hour, accompanied by gusts and thunder and lightning. Because showers are concentrated in narrow areas, rainfall amounts can vary widely even within the same city or county.
On the 28th as well, showers are expected in the central region and North Gyeongsang Province from the pre-dawn hours through the afternoon. Expected rainfall is 5 to 40 millimeters in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon's inland and mountainous areas, Daejeon, Sejong, and South Chungcheong Province, North Chungcheong Province, and Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province. Gangwon's east coast, Ulleungdo, and Liancourt Rocks are expected to receive 5 to 20 millimeters.
Temperatures may dip temporarily while the showers fall, but the heat will not let up. After the rain stops, humidity will remain high and temperatures will rise again, pushing the apparent temperature even higher.
The KMA said, "Infants, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses should reduce the time they spend outdoors and frequently check on the safety of family members and neighbors," adding, "If symptoms of heat-related illness appear, please call 119 emergency number immediately."
