812 Cases of Law Distortion Offense Reported; Police Account for the Largest Share at 3,535 Suspects

[Financial News] Police have received 812 cases related to the "law distortion offense" since the law took effect.
According to the National Police Agency on the 24th, a total of 812 law distortion offense cases had been filed as of that day, involving 12,892 suspects. The offense is designed to punish judges in criminal cases, prosecutors, and others engaged in investigative work if they distort the law in order to give unlawful or unfair benefits to others or infringe on their rights.
By status, police made up the largest share of suspects at 3,535, or 27.4%. They were followed by 727 prosecutors, or 5.6%, 529 judges, or 4.1%, and 167 prosecutorial investigators and Special Judicial Police Officers, or 1.3%. The rest were found to be non-status individuals, such as central government officials, who are not subject to the law distortion offense.
In terms of case handling, 483 cases involving 9,326 people were closed without referral for investigation, while 28 cases involving 60 people were transferred to other agencies. The remaining 301 cases, involving 3,506 people, are still under investigation.
Police recently dismissed a complaint filed against Cho Hee-dae, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Korea, which had been referred to as the first case under the law distortion offense.
