[Financial News] Broadcaster Choi Hwa-jung is drawing attention after it was reported that she sold her Samsung Electronics and SK hynix shares at their peak and made a substantial profit.
On the 23rd, a video titled "How Much Are Hong Jin-kyung and Uhm Jung-hwa, Who Bought the Same Stocks 10 Years Ago, Worth Now?" was uploaded to the YouTube channel 'Study King Jin Jin Jae Hong Jin Kyung.'
The video shows Hong Jin-kyung visiting actress Uhm Jung-hwa's home and talking with her.
Hong Jin-kyung said, "My sister and I actually have something to feel bad about," adding, "We invested in the same stocks, but things have not gone well. I tear up just thinking about it."
She then said, "These days, everyone is talking about 'Samsung Electronics and SK hynix leveraged ETF,'" prompting Uhm Jung-hwa to lament, "Why didn't we buy any of that?"
Uhm Jung-hwa then called Choi Hwa-jung, saying, "Hwa-jung said she had some."
When Hong Jin-kyung asked Choi Hwa-jung, "Please be honest. Do you have Samsung Electronics and SK hynix shares?" Choi replied, "Yes."
When Uhm Jung-hwa followed up by asking, "Did you sell when they went up?" Choi said, "I usually don't sell the stocks I already own, but I sold them this time. Right at the very top."
Uhm Jung-hwa and Hong Jin-kyung then said, "Congratulations. Buy us a buffet sometime," and Choi shot back, "You think I can't? I could buy it 100 times over. Come wearing elastic-waist pants."
Meanwhile, as semiconductor-related stocks have surged sharply recently, more celebrities have been publicly sharing their stock gains.
Singer Baekga appeared on MBN's 'Dongchimi,' which aired on the 20th of last month, and revealed that he had bought Samsung Electronics shares a year earlier on his manager's recommendation. "I think it was around 80,000 to 90,000 won at the time. My manager said it looked like it would go up, and since my surname is Baek, meaning 100, I bought 100 shares," he said. He added, "After that, I didn't even open it once. But it became a hot topic recently, so I checked and was shocked. I'm really happy now." Economist Kim Kyung-pil, who appeared on the same program, estimated that the return had reached roughly 600% to 700%, expressing his amazement.
By contrast, actress Park Jung-soo said on a YouTube channel last month, "About three or four years ago, I bought several thousand shares of Samsung Electronics in the 80,000 won range. The stock later fell to the 50,000 won range, and I held on for two to three years before finally selling everything, leaving only about 5 million won in profit." She added, "If I had kept holding, I would have made hundreds of millions of won," expressing regret.
Against this backdrop, Choi Hwa-jung's case of selling at the peak is attracting even more attention.
