[Financial News] Park Joon-hyung, a member of the group god, has revealed that he was once diagnosed with arrhythmia after taking too many supplements and living in isolation. His confession has drawn renewed attention to the proper way to take supplements and to heart health management.
Park Joon-hyung recently appeared on broadcaster Dindin's YouTube channel, "DinDin is DinDin," and spoke about health problems he experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said he stayed inside his home for 1 year and 8 months because he was afraid of passing a virus to his young daughter. During that time, he developed a herniated cervical disc from the habit of watching TV at an angle. After returning to broadcasting, he later felt chest pain and shortness of breath while walking uphill. He then went to the hospital and was diagnosed with arrhythmia.
Park said one of the main causes was that he had been taking 15,000 IU of vitamin D3 every day, far above the recommended daily amount, on the advice of an acquaintance. Blood tests showed that his vitamin D level was 10 times higher than that of an average person. He explained that the high-dose intake disrupted calcium metabolism in his body and damaged his health.
Vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates in the body... Be careful of "hypercalcemia" when taking too much
Experts warn that even supplements taken for health reasons can, if overused, trigger cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia, as in Park Joon-hyung's case.
Unlike water-soluble vitamins, vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so excess amounts are not excreted in urine. Instead, they accumulate in fatty tissue or the liver. For that reason, long-term excessive intake can increase calcium absorption in the intestines and raise blood calcium levels above normal, leading to hypercalcemia.
When calcium levels in the blood become too high, the signaling system that controls the contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle is disrupted. This can lead to arrhythmia, in which the heart beats irregularly, or to cardiovascular calcification, where blood vessels harden.
"Pounding Like Being Hit with a Hammer"...Seek Medical Attention Immediately if Warning Signs of Arrhythmia Appear
Arrhythmia refers to a condition in which the heartbeat is too fast, too slow, or irregular.
Typical warning signs include a pounding heartbeat without any clear reason, or a feeling of pressure and pain in the chest. Climbing stairs or walking uphill may cause unusually severe shortness of breath, and arm numbness or dizziness may also occur.
If you feel weak and suddenly develop shortness of breath or chest pain that does not improve, the likelihood of arrhythmia or another cardiovascular disease is high. In that case, you should go to the emergency room immediately for a thorough examination.
For adults, the recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 400 to 600 IU. Even when taking a high dose for treatment purposes, it is safest not to exceed the upper limit of 4,000 IU.
Rather than taking high-dose supplements on your own, it is important to first check your current vitamin levels accurately through a blood test at a hospital.
Above all, walking outdoors in the sunlight for 20 to 30 minutes at least three times a week is the most natural and safest way to support vitamin D synthesis and maintain cardiovascular health.
