[Financial News] The case involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is accused of making statements suggesting that he had never met Jeon Seong-bae, the shaman Geonjin, together with First Lady Kim Keon-hee during the 20th South Korean presidential election, will be recorded and broadcast.
According to the legal community on the 23rd, Criminal Division 21 of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Jo Soon-pyo, approved a recorded broadcast of Yoon's sentencing, scheduled for the 27th, on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.
Yoon is accused of publicly making false statements while running as a candidate ahead of the 2022 South Korean presidential election in 2021.
At a Kwanhun Club forum on Dec. 14, 2021, Yoon said, in response to a question about whether he had ever introduced a lawyer in the bribery case involving former Yongsan Tax Office chief Woo Jin Yun, that he had never introduced a lawyer. He also said at an interview during the launch ceremony of the Buddhist Leaders Forum on Jan. 17, 2022, that he had never been introduced to Jeon by a party official and had never met him together with Kim Keon-hee.
The Special Prosecutor Team for Kim Keon Hee, led by Special Counsel Min Joung-kie, determined that all of Yoon's responses were false and applied charges under the Public Official Election Act. The team said Yoon intentionally spread false information in a situation that could have affected his approval ratings ahead of the presidential election. It also believes that Yoon did introduce a lawyer to former tax office chief Yun and that he was introduced to Jeon by Kim. The special prosecutor team requested a two-year prison sentence for Yoon.
