[Financial News] SK Telecom is moving to standardize internationally the data production and utilization framework needed for robot artificial intelligence (AI) training. The company aims to expand its digital twin technology, developed in manufacturing AI, into robotics and build core infrastructure for the era of physical AI.
SK Telecom said on the 23rd that a new standardization project on robot data production and utilization systems was adopted at an international standardization meeting of the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), held in Geneva, Switzerland, from the 14th to the 22nd.
The adopted project is the 'Robot Data Factory (RDF) integration structure and method' proposed by SK Telecom to systematically produce and use data needed for AI training of intelligent robots such as humanoids. Robot motion data is essential for training robot AI to perform tasks such as picking up and moving objects and using tools. However, data creation and exchange methods differ by robot model and installed software, limiting data compatibility and use across different systems.
To address this, SK Telecom proposed a new standardization project to Study Group 11 (SG11) under ITU-T, defining the roles of key RDF functions, the integration structure, and the data exchange method. After review and discussion by ITU-T members, the project was adopted as a new standardization item at the July meeting.
Under the project, the RDF structure will be divided into five layers: service, robot model and data, infrastructure, device, and management. SK Telecom plans to establish the roles of each layer and the interlayer integration standards so that different functions can be easily connected, replaced, and expanded across different robots and platforms. It also plans to strengthen the usability of its Digital Twin-based robot training platform, which is scheduled for release in the second half of the year. Through this international standardization effort, the company aims to expand cooperation with domestic and global robotics and AI companies and research institutions, and contribute to the growth of the robot data ecosystem.
Choi Dong-hee, head of SK Telecom's AI Strategy Planning Office, said, "We will continue to lead international standardization in robotics based on our technological competitiveness across robot training platforms and AI models."
