[Financial News] A trader who had gone all-in on SK hynix through margin trading and posted a plea for money on an online community has sparked controversy after it was revealed that the investor later put all of the funds into Sam Chun Dang Pharm. again.
According to FMKorea on the 21st, investor A posted a message on the 18th titled, "I am in a margin-trading position that absolutely has to be sold on Monday. Please help."
A said, "I am ashamed and sorry, but is there anyone who can lend me money so I can cover the margin shortfall?" and added, "Of the 230 million won I currently have, 140 million won is margin debt." A then said, "If the stock returns to my break-even point, I will sell and give 10 million won as a token of appreciation."
The account screen A shared showed SK hynix stocks making up 100% of the portfolio. At the time, the unrealized loss stood at more than 32 million won, or -13.89%.
Margin trading is a short-term credit transaction in which investors buy stocks by paying only part of the settlement amount. If the balance is not covered by the deadline, the brokerage forcibly sells the shares in a margin call.
However, A's portfolio was later confirmed to have shifted from SK hynix to 100% Sam Chun Dang Pharm., a KOSDAQ-listed company. It appears the investor switched to a highly volatile, fast-rising stock in an attempt to recover losses.
The problem is that Sam Chun Dang Pharm. has recently surged in price and is currently designated as a stock requiring investment caution.
On the 21st, Sam Chun Dang Pharm. fell 29.92% from the previous trading day, or 71,500 won, and closed at the daily limit-down price of 167,500 won.
The post has since been deleted.
After hearing the story, online users responded with comments such as, "This is gambling, not investing," "You cut your losses and then went into something even riskier to get revenge," "When you lose money, the urge to recover it quickly makes you fall even harder," and "If you're badly trapped in a stock, you can't make rational decisions because you keep thinking about getting back to even."
