The heavy casualties from Iran's ballistic missile attack on a U.S. base in Jordan, which killed two American service members, were caused by a strike on a prefabricated barracks, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 20th local time.
The airstrike killed two soldiers from the U.S. Army air defense unit, left one missing, and injured many others.
Citing U.S. government officials, WSJ reported that the missile hit a containerized housing unit (CHU), leading to the high number of casualties. Identification work is now under way on the remains recovered at the scene, and if the missing person is confirmed dead, the death toll will rise to three.
WSJ noted that three Iranian missiles penetrating U.S. air defenses underscored how difficult it is to protect the roughly 50,000 U.S. troops stationed across the Middle East.
Iran's military is believed to have advanced guided-missile technology designed to defeat Western air defenses by flying at hypersonic speeds and changing course unpredictably in the terminal phase.
