After the match, Trump, the leader of one of the tournament's co-hosts, presented medals and the trophy to the Spanish team alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
But as soon as Trump appeared, boos swept through the stands. His behavior after the ceremony also drew criticism. Even during Spain's championship celebration, when the team should have had the full spotlight, Trump remained in place and did not move. At the tournament's biggest highlight, he was clearly caught on camera, revealing his trademark desire for media exposure. Infantino, who was standing nearby, eventually guided him out, and only then did Trump leave.
This was not the first time Trump has been accused of acting without regard for the moment. At last year's Club World Cup final ceremony in July, he also stayed on the podium, drawing criticism for overshadowing Chelsea's players.
Germany's DPA reported that "Trump tried to disrupt Spain's World Cup celebration." AFP also criticized him, saying that "despite the loud boos, Trump seemed intoxicated by the attention pouring in at the event."
Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that the tournament is expected to generate $15 billion, or about 22.35 trillion won, in revenue. That is far above the original estimate of $11 billion, and analysts say it was made possible by the United States' commercialized approach, including the first-ever halftime performance in World Cup history.
