Fire at Incheon Coupang Logistics Center... Police Form 35-Member Task Force to Determine Cause

[Financial News, Incheon = Han Gap-su] A special investigation team made up of 35 police officers has begun work to determine how the fire at the Incheon Coupang logistics center started and how it spread. Once firefighting is completed, a joint on-site forensic inspection will be carried out with the National Forensic Service. Police also plan to examine whether the initial response was appropriate, using the fire at the Icheon Deokpyeong center five years ago as a precedent.
According to the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency on the 20th, the newly formed "Seoknam-dong Coupang Logistics Center Fire Investigation Task Force" was launched that day. The team consists of personnel from the Metropolitan Criminal Investigation Unit 1 and the Serious Accident Investigation Unit within the Metropolitan Criminal Investigation Unit of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, and it will be led by Jang Seong-yun, head of the Metropolitan Criminal Investigation Unit.
The task force will focus on how the fire began and the route through which it spread. After the blaze is fully brought under control, the team plans to conduct a detailed inspection of the site together with the National Forensic Service.
Police are paying particular attention to the June 2021 fire at the Icheon Deokpyeong logistics center in Gyeonggi Province. At the time, investigators found signs that the initial response was delayed after fire alarm systems in the disaster control room were turned off six times. Police applied charges of violating the Act on the Prevention of Fire and Installation, Maintenance, and Safety Control of Fire-Fighting Systems. Three people, including a fire safety manager and an employee from an outsourced facility management company, were indicted and received suspended prison terms of one year with two years of probation in both the first trial and the appeals court.
