People Power Party to Launch Filibuster Against Second Special Counsel Extension... "An Extension of a Security-State Climate"

[Financial News] The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) plans to convene a plenary session of the National Assembly on the 20th and push through a revision bill that would extend the Second Comprehensive Special Counsel's mandate by 30 days. In response, the People Power Party is set to launch a filibuster, or unlimited debate used to legally obstruct legislative proceedings. The party has strongly opposed the Second Comprehensive Special Counsel, calling it a "political special counsel" aimed at suppressing the opposition.
People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik said at a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly that day, "Another name for extending the Second Comprehensive Special Counsel again is the extension of a security-state climate used to suppress the opposition." He added, "It means continuing a special counsel-centered security-state approach that uses the special counsel's blade to round up opposition figures and suppress the opposition, instead of dismantling the prosecution."
Jeong also said, "The problem is the Lee Jae-myung administration's fundamental self-contradiction and its do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do style of state affairs under this security-state climate." He noted that "the Second Comprehensive Special Counsel is, by nature, a supplementary investigation to the first three special counsels for insurrection, Kim Keon-hee, and Chae Hae-byeong, yet while the government seeks to abolish the prosecution's supplementary investigation powers, it is extending a special counsel built around supplementary investigations."
At the same meeting, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk again stressed the need to push for a special counsel into the National Election Commission (NEC). He said, "While political special counsel teams sat in air-conditioned offices, our people battled the heat at Olympic Park." He added, "As the Lee Jae-myung administration trampled on the Constitution and held its own Constitution Day, young people and citizens stood guard in the square, calling for special counsels and by-elections."
Jang said, "What the citizens who gave up their holiday and went out to Olympic Park in the heat and heavy rain to mark Constitution Day and the so-called 'Olggong Day' are trying to protect is the Constitution and the people's right to vote." He continued, "If the administration tries to destroy the Constitution, the people will bring down the administration. If the president tries to strip away voting rights, the people will strip away the president's power."
He also said, "Only a people-led special counsel, with recommendations from the People Power Party and no limits on the scope of investigation, can restore the stolen right to vote and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Korea." He added, "The people will not give up until the day a people-led special counsel is realized."
