With heavy rain advisories in place across parts of the southern region, very heavy rain is expected through the morning of the 19th, mainly in the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon State, the Chungcheong Region, the Jeolla Region, and the Gyeongsang region. Rain may briefly stop in some areas, but showers could concentrate over small areas, so caution is needed against river overflows and flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), as of 11 p.m. on the 18th, heavy rain warnings were in effect for parts of North and South Gyeongsang, while heavy rain advisories remained in place for the rest of the southern region. Some areas in the south were seeing 10 to 30 mm of rain per hour, while Gangwon State and the Chungcheong Region were receiving 10 to 20 mm per hour.
Between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., 23.0 mm of rain fell in Cheonbu, Ulleung, 22.5 mm in Gwangsan, Gwangju, and 20.0 mm at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST). Yeodeok in Yeongwol County, Gangwon, recorded 19.5 mm, Noeun in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, 17.5 mm, and Gayasan in Hapcheon County, South Gyeongsang Province, 16.0 mm.
Rain is expected to continue in many parts of the country through the 19th under the influence of a stationary front. However, many areas are likely to see intermittent rain and brief lulls.
The KMA forecast that between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on the 19th, very heavy rainfall could hit parts of the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon State, the Chungcheong Region, the Jeolla Region, and the Gyeongsang region. Rainfall amounts may vary widely even within the same city or county, so it is advisable to check the latest weather updates and heavy rain alerts frequently.
