[Financial News] Hanwha Group's Philly Shipyard has won a contract to build a maritime missile test instrumentation ship, or MRIV, for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
Hanwha Philly Shipyard said on the 18th that it had been selected, together with U.S. ship management company TOTE Services, as the delivery contractor for the MDA's maritime missile test instrumentation ship.
The maritime missile test instrumentation ship is designed to support missile flight tests by tracking trajectories, collecting telemetry data, and analyzing communications and test results. Hanwha Philly Shipyard will handle shipbuilding, while TOTE Services will serve as vessel construction manager, or VCM. Delivery of the first ship is scheduled for 2030.
Hanwha did not disclose the exact contract value or the number of ships involved. Industry sources estimate the deal at $2 billion, or about 3 trillion won, for two vessels.
Russell Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), said at a local event, "These new ships will not only support the president's policy to restore America's maritime dominance, but also support the Golden Dome missile defense system across the United States." The Golden Dome project is a next-generation air and missile defense system that the Trump administration is advancing as a key priority for defending the U.S. mainland.
