[Financial News] Han Dong-hoon, an independent lawmaker, and Lee Geon-tae of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) are set to hold a debate for and against a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act of the Republic of Korea that would abolish supplementary investigation rights. Both are former prosecutors and have served as chief prosecutors. Lee is a 19th class graduate of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, while Han is from the 27th class, making them senior and junior colleagues in the prosecution.
According to political sources on the 17th, the debate between Han and Lee on whether to abolish supplementary investigation rights was arranged that day. Han had proposed a public debate on the 14th to DPK lawmakers pushing for the abolition, and Lee accepted through social networking service (SNS) on the 17th, saying, "Let's debate, with me, who spent 20 years as a prosecutor and personally experienced the reality of political prosecutors while serving as Lee Jae Myung's defense counsel in the Daejang-dong case."
Han then said, "Lee Geon-tae, who described himself as Lee Jae Myung's Daejang-dong defense counsel, has accepted my proposal for a debate on abolishing supplementary investigation rights as the DPK's representative," adding, "I will try to make it a productive discussion from the public's perspective, not an emotional fight."
The two lawmakers are expected to coordinate the schedule and broadcaster for the public debate. In an additional SNS post, Han said, "The venue for the debate on whether to abolish supplementary investigation rights can be anywhere, as long as Lee Geon-tae agrees and as many people as possible can watch," and added, "I agreed after Lee said he wanted to hold the debate on JTBC."
