' This principle of national sovereignty has been the compass that has sustained the democratic republic of the Republic of Korea for the past 78 years. " He continued, "On the occasion of Constitution Day, I am once again prompted to reflect on how we should uphold the values of national sovereignty, freedom, and democracy declared by the Constitution in our lives today.
The modern history of the Republic of Korea shows that the people themselves [claimed] sovereignty in the face of forces attempting to undermine the values of the Constitution and democracy and privatize power. " "It was a fierce history of defense," he said, adding, "Through our long history, we have confirmed that democracy is not guaranteed forever simply because it has been won once, but must be continuously defended through the participation, courage, and solidarity of citizens.
" President Lee emphasized, "The state of emergency declared in the middle of the night on December 3, 2024, reminded us all that threats to democracy are by no means a thing of the past, but a reality that can be repeated at any time in today's Republic of Korea. " He continued, "However, the great people of Korea proved to the whole world through the 'Revolution of Light' that the spirit of popular sovereignty inscribed in our Constitution is alive and breathing in our lives.
" He further explained, "The Government of Popular Sovereignty will certainly remember and carry on this great history," adding, "We will also systematically collect and preserve records of the Revolution of Light so that K-democracy can spread widely as a model for global democracy. To this end, we launched the 'Committee of Light' last Monday.
" President Lee stated, "I am attaching a letter of appreciation to the citizens who are joining us for today's citizen invitation event," and added, "In the middle of winter “I will never forget the citizens who stayed up all night on the asphalt sharing a single foil blanket, the young people who guarded the front of the National Assembly in preparation for possible additional martial law, and the countless people who rushed to Namtaeryeong to stand with the farmers and extend a hand of solidarity.
I am sincerely grateful,” he wrote.
