[Financial News]  Police said they will take a firm stance against online secondary harm targeting the victim and the bereaved family in connection with the Jang Yoon-gi case. They also said reports claiming that "a photo of the victim was found on Jang Yoon-gi's phone" are not true, and urged the public not to spread unverified information.
The Special Investigation Team into the Jang Yoon-gi Case under the National Office of Investigation of the National Police Agency issued a statement on the 16th, saying, "We will respond firmly to online secondary harm that insults or defames the victim and the family."
The special team said, "Spreading unverified claims as if they were facts is also a clear crime that may be subject to criminal punishment," adding that "the National Police Agency's Secondary Victimization Crime Investigation Unit is continuously monitoring related posts."
It specifically stressed that recent media reports claiming that "a photo of the victim was found on Jang Yoon-gi's phone" are not true.
The special team said, "The claim reported by some media outlets that 'a photo of the victim was found on Jang Yoon-gi's phone' is not true," and added, "We are concerned that categorical statements made without objective verification could cause further pain to the victim and the bereaved family."
Earlier, the special team said in a briefing that it had secured evidence suggesting Jang Yoon-gi may have known the victim unilaterally even before the crime, and that it was conducting additional investigations. The evidence was reportedly found on a spare phone he was carrying when he was arrested.
The special team said, "We are continuing additional investigations to correct parts of the early probe in which key facts were not fully confirmed," and again urged the public to "refrain from spreading unverified speculative information."
