[Financial News] Han Byung-do, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), said on the 15th that the party would continue deliberations on a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act of the Republic of Korea aimed at abolishing the Public Prosecution Office's supplementary investigation powers, while also pushing to legislate it on time. He said the party would not let the conclusion it failed to reach at the previous day's caucus meeting drag on.
At a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly that day, Han said, "For the Serious Crime Investigation Agency and the Public Prosecution Office to launch smoothly on Oct. 2, sufficient deliberation and timely passage of the revision to the Criminal Procedure Act must be completed," adding, "We will secure both sufficient deliberation and timely legislation."
He emphasized, "Amending the Criminal Procedure Act is key legislation to complete the grand principle of prosecutorial reform — the complete separation of investigation and prosecution — and to build a new, citizen-centered criminal justice system."
He added, "The DPK is concentrating all its efforts on improving the bill until the very end so that the new system can operate stably in people's daily lives," and said, "Because this bill is directly tied to the public interest and victim protection, we will engage in intense discussions while broadly gathering opinions from within the party as well as from the legal community, academia and civil society."
