[Financial News] The KOSPI, which fluctuated throughout the day, closed higher on the back of rebounds in Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
On the 14th, the KOSPI finished trading at 6,856.83, up 49.90 points, or 0.73%, from the previous session. After moving up and down during the day, the index turned upward late in the session.
Individual investors posted net sales of 414.28 billion won, while institutions and foreign investors were net buyers of 321.59 billion won and 95.28 billion won, respectively.
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, which had widened their losses intraday, reversed course and rose 3.34% and 3.69%, respectively. In contrast, Samsung Electro-Mechanics (-2.25%), Hyundai Motor Company (-4.39%), LG Energy Solution (-1.98%), KB Financial Group (-3.33%), and Samsung Life Insurance (-2.76%) ended weaker.
By sector, electricity and electronics, manufacturing, and medical and precision equipment showed strength, while transportation equipment and parts, securities, chemicals, metals, IT services, entertainment and culture, and construction declined.
Brokerage houses say the recent stock-price correction reflects caution over valuations after a strong run, despite expectations for semiconductor earnings. They also said volatility has increased as supply-demand factors and geopolitical risks have combined.
Lee Eun-taek, a researcher at KB Securities, said, "Several factors are intricately intertwined, including credit and margin call forced selling, net foreign selling, a decline in customer deposits, and exchange-traded fund (ETF) rebalancing." He added, "Supply-demand concerns may remain, but in the long term, extreme stock-price swings will become investment opportunities."
Meanwhile, the KOSDAQ closed at 783.98, down 15.38 points, or 1.92%, from the previous session. At 12:06 p.m. that day, a program trading sell-side sidecar was triggered in the KOSDAQ market. At the time of activation, the KOSDAQ 150 futures price stood at 1,306.80, down 84.70 points, or 6.08%, from the previous day's close, while the KOSDAQ 150 spot index fell 86.69 points, or 6.25%, to 1,298.20.
The KOSDAQ sell-side sidecar is triggered when the KOSDAQ 150 futures price falls at least 6% from the reference price and the KOSDAQ 150 index drops at least 3% from the previous trading day's final level, with both conditions sustained for one minute.
