KOSPI swings wildly on sharp moves in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix; KOSDAQ triggers sell-side circuit breaker [Afternoon Market Report]

[Financial News] KOSPI is seeing a roller-coaster session as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix swing sharply intraday.
As of 1:40 p.m. on the 14th, KOSPI was trading at 6,743.62, down 63.31 points, or 0.93%, from the previous session. It briefly touched 6,979.92 early in the session in an attempt to reclaim the 7,000 level, but later turned lower again and at one point fell to 6,448.86.
Retail investors are showing heavy selling. Foreign investors and institutions posted net purchases of 172.6 billion won and 3.0319 trillion won, respectively, but retail investors were net sellers of 3.1859 trillion won.
As Samsung Electronics repeatedly surges and falls intraday, the index is also showing extreme volatility. Samsung Electronics was trading at 262,000 won, up 7,500 won, or 2.95%, from the previous close. Earlier in the morning, it had jumped as much as 6.09% to 270,000 won, but in the afternoon it briefly slipped below the 250,000-won mark.
SK hynix was trading at 1,802,000 won, down 43,000 won, or 2.33%. It had risen as much as 4.55% to 1,929,000 won in the morning, but later plunged more than 9% and fell below the 1.7 million-won level.
Elsewhere, SK Square and Shinhan Financial Group were higher, up 0.78% and 1.29%, respectively. In contrast, Samsung Electro-Mechanics fell 5.47%, Hyundai Motor 6.19%, LG Energy Solution 0.91%, KB Financial Group 0.97%, Samsung Life Insurance 2.91%, and Samsung Biologics 2.36%.
Most sectors are weaker, except transportation and warehousing. In particular, transportation equipment and parts, securities, construction, machinery and equipment, chemicals, entertainment and culture, retail, metals, IT services, and pharmaceuticals are posting steep declines.
At the same time, KOSDAQ was trading at 767.70, down 31.66 points, or 3.96%, from the previous session.
At 12:06 p.m. that day, a sell-side circuit breaker was briefly triggered in the KOSDAQ market. At the time, the KOSDAQ 150 Index futures price had fallen 84.70 points, or 6.08%, from the previous close to 1,306.80, while the KOSDAQ 150 Index itself was down 86.69 points, or 6.25%, at 1,298.20.
The KOSDAQ sell-side circuit breaker is triggered when the KOSDAQ 150 Index futures price falls 6% or more from the reference price and the KOSDAQ 150 Index drops 3% or more from the previous trading day's final level, with both conditions sustained for one minute.
