[Financial News] Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor foundry company, is continuing its remarkable growth, driven by surging demand for artificial intelligence chips.
On the 13th (local time), CNBC reported, citing TSMC's earnings release, that the company's revenue in June jumped 67.9% from a year earlier to NT$442.68 billion, or about 21 trillion won. The figure also marked a 6.2% increase from the previous month, further raising market expectations ahead of the company's full second-quarter earnings announcement later this week.
TSMC's total revenue for the first half of this year, from January to June, came to NT$2.4 trillion, or about 113 trillion won. That was up 35.6% from the same period last year.
This relentless growth has been driven by aggressive investment in AI infrastructure by global companies and a sharp rise in demand for AI chips. TSMC produces advanced semiconductors across the board, from smartphones to high-performance AI computing systems, and counts major U.S. tech companies such as NVIDIA, Apple and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) among its key customers.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, TSMC held a dominant 73% share of the global foundry market in the first quarter of this year, cementing its lead. Backed by strong earnings, TSMC shares closed more than 1% higher on the Taiwan stock market that day.
TSMC is also accelerating efforts to expand production capacity to meet the flood of orders.
Foreign media reported, citing comments by Wu Cheng-wen, chairman of Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), that TSMC plans to build two additional advanced semiconductor packaging plants in the Chiayi Science Park in southern Taiwan. Wu said, "The first facility at the site has already entered mass production, and the second facility is also expected to begin operations soon."
Meanwhile, TSMC's official second-quarter earnings release, which is expected to help determine the direction of the global semiconductor market, is scheduled for the 16th.
