The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it immediately activated its heat wave support center and is monitoring weather conditions, heat-related illness cases and protection measures for vulnerable groups in real time.
In particular, the city is concentrating its administrative resources on protecting people vulnerable to disasters. For seniors who need care, staff first check on their well-being by phone. If they cannot be reached, dedicated personnel visit them in person to closely assess their health.
The city also plans to significantly increase the number of staff in areas with large homeless populations to strengthen patrols and counseling.
Protective measures for outdoor construction workers, who face a high risk of heat-related illness, will also be strictly enforced. The city will strongly recommend that each worksite guarantee sufficient rest time and provide break areas for workers, while thoroughly checking compliance on site.
Each district has also activated emergency response rooms and moved quickly with preventive measures. Cooling facilities, heat shelters and emergency relief supplies have already been prepared. In particular, 24 districts in Seoul, excluding Gangbuk District, which is using a temporary office while its new building is under construction, have designated district office buildings as 'cooling shelters' and opened them 24 hours a day to provide safe rest spaces and nighttime refuge from the heat.
A Seoul Metropolitan Government official said, "We plan to quickly and continuously provide guidance on heat wave safety measures for all residents through city-owned electronic billboards, the official website and safety alert text messages," and urged the public to remain especially cautious.
