At a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Han said, "The Democratic Party is also aware of the concerns raised by some over the abolition of supplementary investigation rights," adding, "We will prepare robust follow-up measures during the review process at the Legislation and Judiciary Committee."
In a separate investigation by prosecutors, it was recently revealed that the investigation team in the 'Gwangju high school girl murder case' and the father of suspect Jang Yoon-gi, who works for the police, were involved in the investigation and attempted to destroy evidence.
As a result, some have argued that prosecutors need supplementary investigation rights to keep the police in check. Han's remarks appear to have been made with those criticisms in mind.
However, Han also repeatedly stressed that the principle of separating investigation and prosecution remains unchanged.
He said, "The prosecution's monopoly over investigative and prosecutorial powers has provided the institutional foundation for it to wield unchecked power over the past 80 years," adding, "The Democratic Party will uphold the principle of separating investigation and prosecution to the end and complete prosecution reform that serves the people, not those in power."
