Lee Eok-won, chairperson of the Financial Services Commission, said at the Financial Security Institute's "Information Security Day event for financial company CEOs" on the 10th, "We will move quickly to establish a system that defends AI attacks with AI," adding that this is the direction the authorities will pursue.
Information Security Day is a statutory commemorative day established to prevent cyberattacks and promote everyday information security, following a large-scale cyberattack on July 7, 2009. The event was organized to help the financial sector explore joint responses to increasingly sophisticated AI-based cyberattacks.
Lee also stressed, "We will continue to communicate with the industry to build an AI security framework and make steady regulatory improvements suited to a changing era, so that we can create a safe and trusted digital financial environment," adding, "We will carry out the AI security tests under the emergency easing measures for network segregation that have been in effect since last month without disruption."
He also outlined plans to ease and eventually lift network segregation rules in the financial sector.
Lee said, "We will also soon finalize and announce a plan to fully lift network segregation for financial companies with sufficient AI and security capabilities."
The event also included a ceremony to present Financial Services Commission commendations to institutions, CEOs and chief information security officers (CISOs) who contributed to the development of financial security and information protection. In the group category, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Korea Securities Finance received awards for helping strengthen the reliability and stability of the financial industry. In the individual category, awards were presented to KakaoBank CEO Yun Ho-young, Citibank Korea executive vice president Jang Eun-young, and DB Insurance division head Kim Dae-hee.
Lectures also followed on "Financial Security Governance" by Professor Koh Hak-soo of Seoul National University and "AI Innovation and Security" by Professor Lee Sang-geun of Korea University.
