Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 3,889 as search efforts wind down and reconstruction is discussed

[Financial News] The cumulative death toll from the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on the 24th of last month rose to 3,889 as of the 9th. Local authorities are now winding down rescue operations while discussing reconstruction.
According to foreign media outlets, including AFP, National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodríguez said on Telegram on the 9th that the cumulative death toll had increased from 3,811 the previous day to 3,889. The number of injured was put at 16,740, while the number of displaced people who lost their homes was estimated at 17,907. A total of 6,462 people have been rescued since the earthquake.
Since the powerful quakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck western Caracas on the 24th of last month, a total of 1,142 aftershocks have been recorded through the 9th. In La Guaira State, north of Caracas, where the damage was most severe, more than 800 buildings were damaged and 190 of them completely collapsed.
In Venezuela, no additional survivors have been found since a man in his 40s was rescued from a shopping center in Catia La Mar, La Guaira State, on the 2nd. Mass burials began locally on the 5th, and foreign rescue teams are preparing to withdraw.
Acting U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela John Barrett said in a statement on the 8th that four U.S. rescue teams had completed their mission and returned home, adding that they rescued six people. Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez urged countries that have frozen Venezuelan assets to lift the restrictions, saying they are needed for disaster response. In connection with this, International Monetary Fund spokesperson Julie Kozack said the IMF is in talks with South American countries over lifting the freeze on Venezuela's financial assets. Separately, the UN plans to raise about $300 million for reconstruction in Venezuela.
