[Financial News, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia = Sung Seok-woo] President Lee Jae-myung and First Lady Kim Hye-kyung made a surprise visit to Ulaanbaatar's "Seoul Street" on the evening of the 9th (local time) during their state visit to Mongolia.
Ahn Gwi-ryeong, a deputy spokesperson for the Blue House, said in a written briefing that the presidential couple toured Seoul Street, including a Korean-brand convenience store, restaurants, and "Seoul Pavilion," a traditional Korean-style pavilion. Seoul Street was developed in 1995 to mark the sister-city relationship between Seoul and Ulaanbaatar.
Mongolian citizens gathered at the scene welcomed the presidential couple by shouting in Korean, "Hello," "Nice to meet you," and "Thank you." The couple responded by shaking hands and exchanging high-fives with the crowd. One citizen on a motorcycle drew smiles by making a finger heart gesture.
The presidential couple expressed delight after spotting Korean signs such as "pork" on the street, and they also greeted a Mongolian citizen who said he had studied in Korea more than 20 years ago.
They then went up to Seoul Pavilion and personally bought and tasted kimbap, tteokbokki, and dumplings from a nearby street vendor. When the couple said, "It's delicious," and asked whether Mongolians also liked tteokbokki, the vendor replied, "It is especially popular among young people."
Korean residents also offered their support, saying, "Stay strong," "Thank you for your efforts," and "We feel reassured." The presidential couple later ended the day with dinner at "Goraebul," a Korean restaurant run by a Mongolian citizen, where they had tofu kimchi, grilled mackerel, and bibimbap.
