[Financial News] Actress Youn Yuh-jung has been named a nominee for the Emmy Awards, the most prestigious television awards in the United States. Attention is now focused on whether Youn, the first Korean actor to win an Academy Award (the Oscars), will also take home an Emmy Award.
Yonhap News Agency reported on the 9th, citing Deadline, that Youn was included in the nomination list announced by the Television Academy for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
In Netflix's BEEF Season 2, Youn played Chairman Park, a wealthy Korean businessman who newly acquired a country club. She starred opposite Song Kang-ho, who made a special appearance as Dr. Kim, in a May-December marriage role.
BEEF 2, directed by Korean American filmmaker Lee Seong-jin, received a sweeping number of Emmy nominations that day. It was nominated not only for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, the top series prize, but also for multiple categories including lead actress for Carey Mulligan, lead actor for Oscar Isaac, supporting actor for Charles Melton, outstanding casting, outstanding contemporary costumes, outstanding directing, and outstanding editing.
BEEF also dominated the 2024 season 1 awards, winning eight trophies including the top series prize and the lead actor and actress categories. At the time, Korean American actor Steven Yeun drew attention for winning the lead actor award.
Youn won the Academy Awards (the Oscars) in 2021 for the film Minari, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Earlier, Lee Jung-jae won the Emmy Award for lead actor in the Squid Game series in 2022. If Youn wins an Emmy Award this time, she will set a new record.
Meanwhile, the 78th Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
