[Financial News] Starbucks Korea, which recently faced controversy over its 'Tank Day' event, is launching a 'Summer Coupon' promotion offering free drinks and food discounts.
On the 8th, Starbucks said it will provide coupons for free drinks and food discounts to all members of Starbucks Rewards. Existing members received the coupons in a batch that day, while members who sign up by the 31st of this month will receive them the next day.
The event runs through next month 14. The free drink coupon can be used for a Tall hot or iced drink and can be exchanged for one Americano, cafe latte, or vanilla latte. Based on a Tall iced drink, an Americano costs 4,700 won, while a cafe latte and vanilla latte cost 5,200 won each.
During the same period, Starbucks will also issue coupons that offer 30% off menu items such as sandwiches, cakes, bread, and ice cream.
Starbucks Rewards is a membership program for customers who sign up on the official website or mobile app. As of early this year, it had about 15 million members.
A Starbucks official explained that the event is "part of a customer benefits program we have operated for a long time." In January this year, Starbucks distributed buy-one-get-one-free coupons for Americano, cafe latte, and vanilla latte. It also offered 30% discount coupons for handcrafted drinks in January, February, and April.
Earlier, after controversy erupted over an event tied to the 5·18 Democratic Uprising anniversary, Starbucks said in an internal notice on May 20 that it felt "a heavy sense of responsibility" and postponed a promotion and the launch of its summer new products. Since the end of last month, it has resumed the summer product launches that had been temporarily put on hold, and has also restarted member promotions.
