[Financial News, New York = Reporter Lee Byung-chul] Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce company, will issue additional corporate bonds worth at least $25 billion, or 37.9625 trillion won, to expand investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Including funds raised in the United States, Europe, and Canada so far this year, its total bond issuance has reached about $89 billion, or 133.5267 trillion won. As the race for AI dominance intensifies, major tech companies are turning to large-scale borrowing one after another.
CNBC reported on the 7th, citing sources, that Amazon plans to raise at least $25 billion by issuing bonds with eight maturities. The company also disclosed its financing plan to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that day, but did not reveal the exact size of the offering.
Amazon is also said to have told the investment banks managing the deal that it does not plan to issue any more corporate bonds this year.
This bond sale follows about $54 billion in corporate bond issuance in the United States and Europe earlier this year, as well as an additional $10 billion raised in Canada in June. Once the latest offering is completed, Amazon’s total bond financing this year will rise to at least $89 billion. The funds are expected to go toward expanding AI investment. Amazon plans to increase capital expenditures this year to $200 billion, up 53% from $131 billion last year. Most of the investment will be used to build infrastructure such as AI data centers, semiconductors, and servers.
