Death toll from Venezuela earthquake rises to 2,954; chances of finding survivors slim

The death toll from the powerful earthquake in Venezuela is nearing 3,000.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on the 4th local time, citing an official announcement from the Venezuelan government, that the number of confirmed deaths from the earthquake that struck on the 24th of last month had risen to 2,954. That was up 309 from the previous day's tally of 2,645. The number of injured has exceeded 16,000.
The golden time for rescue has already passed, and rescue teams are increasingly wrapping up search operations and withdrawing. As a result, the chances of finding additional survivors are fading.
No additional survivors have been rescued since a night security guard at a shopping mall was dramatically pulled out alive on the 2nd, eight days after the earthquake.
A large number of victims are also expected to remain buried under collapsed buildings, making it impossible to recover their bodies. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) had previously estimated that the number of missing people from the earthquake could reach 50,000.
