[Financial News] People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik said on the 3rd that he would form a task force to discuss amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act of the Republic of Korea. The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) is pushing for revisions to abolish supplementary investigation rights as part of prosecution reform, while the People Power Party is protesting, calling it "a mutilation of the judicial system."
At a floor strategy meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Jeong said, "If investigation and prosecution are completely separated and even supplementary investigation rights are abolished, the endless passing of cases between investigative agencies will only increase, and that burden will be passed directly on to victims' suffering." He added, "Why else would even the advisory committee of the Lee Jae-myung administration's prosecution reform task force, and the President himself, say that supplementary investigation rights should be maintained?"
Earlier, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly held its first plenary meeting of the 22nd National Assembly's second half on the 2nd. The People Power Party did not attend, protesting the Democratic Party's control of both the speaker's office and the committee chairmanship. At the meeting, committee chair Seo Young-kyo also pledged to swiftly process the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act that would abolish supplementary investigation rights.
In response, Jeong said, "The Legislation and Judiciary Committee is taking the lead in destroying the country's judicial system," adding, "Democratic Party lawmakers on the committee, including Chair Seo, who are intoxicated by the cheers of their hardline supporters, will tear apart the rule of law with the blade of power."
Jeong argued, "Why is the ruling party so obsessed with destroying the rule of law?" He said, "It is because of a shallow political calculation to rally hardline supporters with a narrative of revenge against the prosecution ahead of the Democratic Party's party convention."
He went on to say, "The Legislation and Judiciary Committee, now controlled by the Democratic Party, has been reduced to a committee where the rule of law has died." He added, "Remember that if a judicial crisis accelerates after the Democratic Party's party convention, the government and the ruling party will bear full responsibility."
