[Financial News] The White House has formally expressed concern, saying the Government of the Republic of Korea is conducting a "discriminatory targeted investigation" against Coupang, a company listed on the U.S. stock market.
2 (local time) A White House official said in response to questions from South Korean media, "The administration is deeply concerned that the Government of the Republic of Korea is discriminatorily targeting U.S. technology companies."
Citing a 35-page preliminary report recently released by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, the official said, "By any reasonable standard, Coupang is now being targeted by the Lee Jae Myung administration. The United States will not tolerate unfair trade practices, including restrictions on market access for digital services."
Earlier, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee had released a report alleging that the South Korean government was carrying out "discriminatory attacks" against U.S.-owned companies, including Coupang.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the congressional report and the White House's response. It said the report was factually inaccurate because it failed to reflect the South Korean government's position or the factual information provided, while one-sidedly presenting only Coupang's position.
