[Financial News] Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Koo Yun-cheol outlined three principles for Korea-U.S. strategic investment: T (Together), O (Opening), and P (Productive).
Deputy Prime Minister Koo said at the first meeting of the Korea-U.S. Strategic Investment Steering Committee, held on the 2nd at the headquarters of the Korea-U.S. Strategic Investment Corporation, that "through Korea-U.S. strategic investment, the government will pursue investments based on the three principles of T.O.P. so that the two countries can evolve into the world's best economic and industrial alliance."
T stands for Together, meaning win-win investment that benefits both countries. Koo explained, "Korea-U.S. strategic investment is not an investment for one country alone. It must secure Korea's interests and create benefits for the United States as well." He added, "An investment that benefits only one side cannot last. Only investments in which both countries grow and succeed together are sustainable. We will contribute to the rebuilding of U.S. manufacturing and the strengthening of supply chains, while also securing Korea's strategic interests and economic gains."
O stands for Opening, meaning investment that opens new opportunities for Korean companies. Koo emphasized, "In a rapidly changing trade environment, we will create a bridgehead for Korea's manufacturing and technological capabilities to enter the world's largest market, the United States." He added, "Through Korea-U.S. strategic investment, we will help our companies grow into key players in the global value chain in strategic industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), energy, and shipbuilding."
P stands for Productive, meaning prudent investment that does not waste a single won of public funds. Koo said, "Korea-U.S. strategic investment is neither one-sided support nor aid. It is an investment in the future of the Republic of Korea." He added, "Because national resources are being deployed, we will thoroughly verify and manage the projects to deliver results. We will invest by comprehensively considering not only financial returns, but also strategic value such as security, diplomacy, trade, supply chain benefits, and the development of strategic industries."
The government plans to uphold the three principles of Korea-U.S. strategic investment while also making every effort to stabilize the foreign exchange market. Koo said, "We will comply with the legal annual investment cap of $20 billion and disburse investments in stages according to project progress." He added, "We will closely monitor market conditions and, if necessary, activate safeguards such as flexibly adjusting the investment scale and timing through consultations between the two countries."
