[Financial News]  As Korean football collapsed in disgrace with a 34th-place finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the controversy over the appointment of former national team coach Jürgen Klinsmann, the 'starting point' of all this tragedy and dysfunction, has finally come under direct investigation by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.
According to police on the 1st, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Metropolitan Investigation Unit abruptly transferred the complaint case alleging improper intervention by Korea Football Association (KFA) President Jung Mong-gyu and others in the appointment of the national team coach from the Seoul Jongno Police Station to the Financial Crime Investigation Unit. An official at the Jongno station explained the transfer, saying it was a measure taken after carefully considering the seriousness of the case.
At the center of the investigation is whether there was illegal intervention by Jung and other senior KFA officials in the appointment process of former coach Jürgen Klinsmann, who drove Korean football into a tailspin, and former coach Hong Myung-bo, who followed with another disaster before stepping down in disgrace.
Initially, the Jongno station had received as many as eight related complaints since July 2024 and had questioned Jung and former technical director Lee Im-saeng, among other senior figures. But for two long years, the investigation barely moved forward, with police essentially only reviewing legal issues. In the meantime, a first-instance ruling in an administrative lawsuit over the same issue was handed down in April, and the situation spiraled further out of control as public anger forced Jung and Coach Hong to resign one after another. That is why criticism of the delayed investigation and doubts about its effectiveness poured in.
In response, an official at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said, "Since the first-instance ruling in the administrative lawsuit was issued in April, it was necessary to watch the court proceedings and outcome before deciding the direction of the investigation."
The starting point of everything that went bizarrely wrong in Korean football, the 'mystery of Klinsmann's appointment,' has now been handed over after two years to the higher-level Metropolitan Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. After reviewing the existing case records in detail, police plan to decide whether to conduct additional intensive questioning of Jung Mong-gyu and other senior officials, who are now cornered. Attention is focused on whether the truth behind the massive allegations of backroom dealing surrounding the KFA will finally come to light.
