S. President Donald Trump has made a bold move by holding a midterm national convention for the first time in history. This is interpreted as a growing sense of crisis following polls showing a tie between Democratic candidates in Texas, a state where the Republican Party has dominated for over 30 years.
The New York Times reported on the 30th (local time) that a poll conducted jointly with Siena College showed Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico and Republican candidate Ken Paxton tied with 47% support each. Texas is a representative Republican stronghold where a Democratic candidate has not won a single statewide election, including Senate and gubernatorial elections, since 1994.
Candidate Paxton is a key figure in the 'MAGA' (Make America Great Again) camp and receives public endorsements from President Trump. However, he was indicted on charges of violating securities laws in 2014 and securities fraud in 2015, and was embroiled in allegations of obstructing an FBI investigation in 2020.
Last year, controversy over his morality persisted as he even faced a divorce lawsuit over allegations of infidelity. In opinion polls, only 39% of respondents said Paxton possessed the right moral values, while candidate Talarico recorded 51%.
The gap also widened in character evaluations, with Paxton at 38% and Talarico at 56%. However, the survey confirmed that 50% of Texas voters still preferred a Republican administration, and also highlighted concerns that candidate Talarico's political leanings were excessively progressive.
Amidst this sense of crisis, Trump announced on his social media platform, TruthSocial, that the Republican National Convention for the midterm elections would be held in Dallas, Texas, on September 10–11. This marks the first time a U.
S. political party has held a national convention ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump also emphasized that it would be a "historic event. " Trump plans to use this event to rally his support base by highlighting his "America First" policies and the achievements of his second term.
He presented tax exemptions on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits, strengthened border controls, price stability, job creation, and energy dominance as his major accomplishments. Political circles believe that if Texas falters, it will have a significant impact on the Republican Party's national election strategy.
The November midterm elections are considered the biggest battleground that will determine the momentum of Trump's administration in the latter half of his term.
